Intelligence analysis. Web development. Applied AI.
Twenty-plus years running on a single throughline: making complex information useful. That's what Tri-Cities AI Lab is built on.
Tri-Cities AI Lab
Kingsport, Tennessee
Building serious, practical AI work here at home.
Dustin Lifford is an intelligence analyst and AI consultant based in Kingsport, Tennessee. He founded Tri-Cities AI Lab to bring serious, practical AI work to businesses across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. It's the kind of work that changes how a company operates, not the kind that ends with another presentation.
His career has run on a single throughline: making complex information useful. Twenty-plus years in web development gave him fluency in the systems businesses actually run on: WordPress, WooCommerce, schema, custom integrations, the unglamorous plumbing that has to work. A move into open-source intelligence at Barrister Intelligence sharpened the research side: source verification, structured findings, evidence organization, and defensible reporting for law firms that need a documented product instead of a Google search. AI tied the two together: the same rigor applied to a different toolset, with the same standard for what counts as finished work.
Previously Director of Digital and Web Development at Six Rivers Media (2012 to 2025), overseeing digital operations across a portfolio of regional news properties; he now supports select digital projects there as an independent contractor. Through Tri-Cities AI Lab, he works directly with SMBs, professional services firms, and regional organizations. He translates AI into tools that save hours, reduce avoidable work, and help local organizations operate better.
What ties it all together is precision. Whether he's writing schema markup, building a forensic chain of custody, or architecting a multi-agent AI workflow, the details matter and he treats them like they do.
Over 30 years rooted in the Tri-Cities.
A+ and MCSE certifications and hardware work starting in high school, before the web was how anyone found a local business.
Ran a PC repair shop during the web directory era. Built a first paid website around 2002, in HTML and frames, for a walk-in client, and submitted client sites to the Yahoo Directory and a local Tri-Cities directory.
Work-from-home Apple technical support, then website building and SEO at scale through a Colombia-based web shop. High volume, tight deadlines, and an early education in what search engines actually reward.
Director of Digital and Web Development at Six Rivers Media. Ran the websites for the Kingsport Times News, Johnson City Press, and two weekly papers, plus more than 100 local sites, through four CMS platform migrations: an in-house custom CMS, Libercus (around 2014), TownNews/BLOX (around 2018, redesigned around 2021), and mynews360/Presteligence (2025). Alongside the newsroom work, served as Director of Programming and Development for The Net360, the company's web consulting division, from 2013 to 2021.
WordPress, CMS, and SEO classes for newsroom and sales staff, instruction for professors at Mountain Empire Community College, and helped develop Northeast State's web design curriculum through the DACUM process.
Stepped away from the director role at Six Rivers Media. Continues supporting select digital projects there as an independent contractor.
Open-source intelligence work at Barrister Intelligence, supporting law firms that need research that holds up under scrutiny. Founder of Tri-Cities AI Lab, building AI strategy, automation, and AI search visibility work for businesses across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Writes regularly at From the Lab about what AI is actually doing to local business, without the hype.

Three disciplines, one standard.
Intelligence Analysis
Open-source intelligence work at Barrister Intelligence: source verification, structured findings, and evidence organization for law firms that need work product that holds up under scrutiny. The discipline is built around turning ambiguous, incomplete information into conclusions that can be documented and defended.
That mindset carries directly into AI strategy: the goal is not a confident-sounding answer, it's a defensible one. No recommendation without reasoning. No advice shaped by an agenda.
Web Development
Twenty-plus years building for the web, from early-generation tools through modern frameworks and platforms. Previously Director of Digital and Web Development at Six Rivers Media (2012 to 2025), overseeing digital operations across a portfolio of regional news properties; now supporting select projects there as an independent contractor.
That depth means fluency in how businesses actually run digitally, not in theory, but in production. The plumbing, the integrations, the things that have to work reliably at scale.
Applied AI
AI as a practical tool, not a marketing pitch. Strategy engagements, automation systems, custom AI applications, and document intelligence, built for regional businesses that need real results, not demos.
The analysis background sets the bar: the same standards that apply to intelligence work apply here. The system has to be right, not just impressive. The recommendation has to hold up, not just sound good.
Precision. Every time.
Schema markup, a forensic chain of custody, a multi-agent AI workflow, the details matter and they get treated like they do. That's not a positioning statement. It's the standard the work has always been held to.
Intelligence analysis taught a particular discipline: you can't deliver a product that won't hold up under scrutiny. Every claim needs a source. Every recommendation needs reasoning. Every gap needs to be acknowledged, not papered over. That standard doesn't change when the work shifts from corporate research to AI consulting.
The Tri-Cities region deserves the same quality of work that businesses in Nashville or Charlotte get from larger firms. Done by someone who actually knows the local market, can meet in person, and answers the phone. That's what Tri-Cities AI Lab is built to provide.
Two decades of sites, systems, and organizations built for real use.
The web development background behind Tri-Cities AI Lab isn't theory. It's 20+ years of production work for government, utilities, education, media, and regional organizations: the kind of systems that have to work, every day, for real people.
